Memory

Asking a question, storing the answer

Every Memory block does the same three things: it asks a visitor something, it stores the answer under a name you choose, and it decides how far that answer travels. Get the name and the reach right and everything downstream works.

There is no separate place to define an answer before you use it. You add a block, the block owns an answer, and the answer appears in every picker on the account from that moment. Deleting the block removes it again.

Sparkles in the block picker mark all thirteen. Three collect contact details, seven collect an answer, and three put what is remembered to work.

    Naming an answer

Six blocks own a named answer you can reuse: Name Capture, Email Capture, Phone Capture, Quick Choice, Custom Input and Geo Check-In. Each has an Answer name field with a sensible default: name, email, phone, choice, value.

Change it to something you will recognise in six months. room beats value. dietary beats choice. The name is what you will pick from a list when you write a greeting or a show-and-hide rule, and a page with three answers all called value is a page you will get wrong.

A Custom Input block on a visitor's page, labelled "Your room number" with a field placeholdered "e.g. 12" and a Save button beneath it.
A Custom Input that would default to an answer named value. Rename it room and everything downstream reads better.
An Email Capture block reading "Hear when the new kreisel tank opens" above a field placeholdered "your@email.com" and a button labelled Keep me posted.
The label and the button are both yours to write. Naming what the visitor gets is what turns an email field into an answer worth giving.

    Choosing how far it travels

Capture blocks carry a Where this is remembered control with three options. The reach you pick decides which other blocks, on which other pages, can read the answer back.

    This Experience
The default for most answers. Only this page can use it. Right for anything that means nothing elsewhere: a table number, a seat, a stop on this trail.
    This Project
Every Experience in the same Project can use it. The option disables itself with the note needs a Project until the Experience is assigned to one.
    Everywhere
Every Experience in your account can use it. The default for a name, an email address and a phone number.

    Adding one, start to finish

    1. 1

Open the Experience and press Add Block

The Memory blocks are spread across Remember & return and Questions & answers, marked with a sparkle.

    2. 2

      Write the question

Short and specific. Any allergies we should know about? beats Preferences.

    3. 3

      Set the Answer name

Lowercase, no spaces, something you will recognise later.

    4. 4

      Set Where this is remembered

Ask yourself where else you want to read this answer. If the honest answer is nowhere, leave it on This Experience.

    5. 5

      Open When someone answers

The panel below the block's own settings. Decide about repeats and notifications before you publish.

    6. 6

      Preview on a phone

The builder preview always behaves as a first-time visitor, so you see the question rather than your own earlier answer.

    The When someone answers panel

One panel, rendered under every block that captures an answer, so a setting means the same thing everywhere.

    Example

Marigold & Vine: remembering an allergy

The table Marker carries a Custom Input block labelled Anything we should keep out of your food?, set to a dropdown with Nuts, Shellfish, Gluten, Dairy and None. Answer name is dietary. Where this is remembered is set to Everywhere, because the answer is just as true at the bar counter and on the takeaway page.

Let visitors answer again is on, so a guest whose party changes can update it. Start blank each visit stays off: the whole point is that the restaurant already knows on the second visit.

A second block, a Custom Input named table, sits above it. That one stays on This Experience, because table four at Marigold & Vine means nothing anywhere else.

Can two blocks write the same answer?

Yes, and sometimes you want that: a name asked at the gate and a name asked at the café can both fill name. The newest answer is the one read back.

What happens to the answers if I delete the block?

The named entry disappears from the pickers. The answers visitors already gave stay on their records in Audience.

Why is This Project greyed out?

Because this Experience is not in a Project yet. Assign it to one and the option becomes selectable. Until then a Project-scoped answer would quietly behave as an Experience-local one.

Do I have to ask before I can personalise anything?

Not always. Welcome Back and Conditional Content can read the visit count and which Experiences someone has seen without asking a single question.
